The American Indians invented it, the Canadians made it their National Sport, and the youth of America have made it the fastest growing youth sport in the nation. Nicknamed The Fastest Sport on Two Feet, lacrosse has infectiously made its way from the hot beds of New York and Maryland to all parts of the United States and many parts of the world. Top-level college programs are fielding players from Ohio, Texas, Colorado, California, and even Florida.
The charge has been led by the private schools in the area, such as 16-time State Champion St. Andrews School in Boca Raton and perennial powers Gulliver Prep and Pine Crest. Other high school programs have been popping up prolifically throughout the state. The demand has driven the Florida High School Athletic Association to officially “sanction” the sport of lacrosse. Varsity or varsity club programs now exist in many of Florida’s high schools including local high schools such as St. Thomas, Archbishop McCarthy, South Plantation, American Heritage, Western, Cypress Bay, Nova, Pines Charter, West Broward and Cooper City. Currently there are thirty-eight (38) boys and forty-three (43) girls high school programs in south Florida alone and and over 250 high school programs combined, state-wide. Read more... Area lacrosse program enjoys solid growth in only its third year March 22, 2010|By Gary Curreri, SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT-SunSentinel
Davie All-Star Program Introduced
The South Florida Youth
Lacrosse League is introducing an All-Star program this
season designed to give the best players an outlet to play
with and against the best players in South
Florida without the time commitment and high costs of summer
travel teams. The inaugural season will feature Boys
Junior, Boys Senior, and Girls Senior divisions. Since this
is Davie's first year for girls, Davie Lacrosse will only be
fielding Boys Junior and Boys Senior All-Star teams in
2010. The program may grow to other divisions in future
years depending on the success of this season. Estimated
cost per player is $80 which will cover jersey, fields,
refs, tournament fee.
The coaches for this year's
teams are:
Junior All-Stars
(players selected)
Head Coach Pete Dunne, Asst Coach Jason Redman
Senior All-Stars
(players selected)
Head Coach Shaun Bamforth, Asst Coach Jeff Benson
The rules for this program
are attached and can be found here
www.davielacrosse.com/allstar.pdf. We are allowed limited
practices or games (5 total) before we participate in the
SFYLL All-Star tournament, which will be held on 4/25 and
5/2 and will be hosted
by Boca Raton this year. We will play to a league champion
at each division. The schedule is as follows (dates/times
subject to change):
- Practices
Fri 4/9 6:30-8:30, Sun 4/11 1-3pm, Fri 4/16 (practice or
game), Sun 4/18 (practice or game), Fri 4/23 6:30-8:30
- Tournament 4/25 and 5/2
IMPORTANT:
The All-Star teams are built to win. This IS the next
level. Unlike our rec program, players will not be
guaranteed equal playing time. Players will need
to earn their time on the field with their play. This
program is for the benefit of the stronger players.
All the above coaches will be involved in the player
selection process for both divisions. We do not wish to
be criticized for our player or play decisions.
The coaches are knowledgeable and experienced (and
volunteers). You will have to trust our judgment
on all aspects of this program.
